Theory and Method

Bloom value is a standardized measure of gel strength, defined as the force required to deform a gel under controlled test conditions.

In a typical Bloom test:

  • A 12.7 mm stainless steel cylindrical probe moves vertically toward the gel surface.
  • The probe penetrates the sample to a depth of 4.00 ± 0.05 mm at a controlled speed.
  • The maximum force required to achieve this penetration depth is recorded.
  • The measured force is automatically converted into Bloom grams (g) and reported as the Bloom value.

Since gel strength is highly influenced by temperature and conditioning time, the system maintains precise displacement and force control throughout the test. Sample preparation and conditioning are managed separately in accordance with established laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring accurate and reproducible results.
