The Story

The Gardner Impact test method evaluates the resistance of a dry film of paint, varnish, or related products to cracking or peeling from a substrate under deformation caused by a falling weight. The test involves applying the coating under examination to suitable, thin metal panels. Once the coating has cured, a standard weight is dropped onto each panel from a height sufficient to induce deformation in both the coating and the substrate.

This test can be conducted with the coated side of the panel facing either upwards, towards the falling weight, or downwards, away from the weight. By incrementally increasing the drop height, the point of failure can be determined. Typically, films fail due to cracking, which can be more easily observed using a magnifier.

The Gardner Impact Test method was developed together with the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) for evaluating impact resistance of rigid sheets of PVC (30-60 mils thick) and other plastics and materials exceeding the 160 inch-pounds limit of the Heavy-Duty Impact Tester.

Gardner-type Impact testers can be used in two ways:

  1. Pass/fail test: Conducted at a specific drop height and with a designated mass to assess compliance with particular specifications.
  2. Classification test: Gradually increasing the drop height and/or mass to determine the minimum mass and/or drop height at which the coating cracks or peels from its substrate.
